Fentanyl Parent Letter

January 30, 2023

September 30, 2022

Dear KUSD Families,

Opioid abuse continues to be a problem in communities throughout California, and Kern County and our valley is no exception. Fentanyl and most recently Rainbow Fentanyl abuse is on the rise. Rainbow fentanyl is a brightly colored fentanyl that can be found in many forms, including pills, powder, and blocks that can resemble sidewalk chalk or candy. Any pill (regardless of its color, shape, or size) that does not come from a health care provider or pharmacist can contain fentanyl and can be deadly.

Fentanyl is extremely potent and it only takes a very small dose, 2 milligrams about the size of the tip of a pencil, to be lethal. Please speak with your children about the dangers of fentanyl and ingesting any medication not prescribed to them by their doctor and given to them by a trusted family member or adult. As we enter October and the Halloween season, please remind your children not to eat any unwrapped or unpackaged candy.

The Kernville Union School District is in the process of obtaining Naloxone Hydrochloride (Narcan) and has policy to administer Naloxone Hydrochloride (Narcan) for emergency medical aid to any person suffering from an opioid overdose. KUSD has trained staff and will train staff members to administer Naloxone Hydrochloride (Narcan) in the case of an emergency.

To keep our students safe, we are reminding students not to ingest any medications unless they are given to them by their parents, trusted family member, or a known and trusted adult; and not to eat any unwrapped or unpackaged candies at school. During Red Ribbon Week in October, our middle school students will learn about the dangers and consequences of fentanyl.

Sharing a Concern or Complaint

January 14, 2022

Kernville Union School District

Helpful Tips for Sharing a Concern or Complaint

All team members of the Kernville Union School District strive to best serve our students. However, there may be times where you have a concern or a complaint. If you have a concern or complaint, it is important you voice your concern or complaint. We cannot improve upon meeting the needs of your child if we do not know about it.

Not sure where to start or whom to contact? Here are some helpful tips:

1. Gather all relevant information about your concern or complaint.

The more information you can gather and provide the better we can serve you.

   Answering these questions may help:

            Who was involved?

            What happened?

            When did it happen?

            Where did it happen?

2. Contact the appropriate school or district team member.

    Contact your child’s teacher when:

            It concerns academics or grades

It concerns anything that happened in the classroom

     Contact the school principal when:

            It concerns the school

It concerns a staff member at the school

It concerns anything that happened at school outside of the classroom

    Contact the superintendent when:

            It concerns the district

It concerns an employee of the district

It concerns a district policy or procedure

3. Share all the information you gathered with the school or district team member you contacted.

            Be prepared to answer questions.

Please be patient. Most concerns take time to investigate and gather information.

Let the person know how to best reach you after they have completed the investigation.

4. Follow up with the school employee you contacted if necessary.

You should expect the school employee to get back to you within a reasonable amount of time. A reasonable amount of time varies; it could be the same day or within 24, 48, or 72 hours.
