January 31, 2013 Dear Parents and Students of Kervnille Union School District: The passing of Proposition 30 has spread hope across our campuses. We have more staff to support the education of our children and will begin looking at programs and sustainability of our staff. Thank you for the increased sales tax that you approved in support of your child’s education. Our enrollment has increased marginally, while our average daily attendance has decreased. If the current trend continues, we will lose $280,000 this year alone. Your child’s attendance is extremely important for them to be successful at school and also build work habits that will help them to be successful in the work place. School safety is a hot news topic not only around the nation but in our valley. With the increased disasters on school campuses we have made some adjustments to secure ours. Here are two of the changes: locking classroom doors and pedestrian gates. These changes were decided after a meeting with law enforcement and a representative of all the schools in the area. Easy access makes our students more vulnerable. Classrooms will be locked while occupied. Please check into the school office, sign in and get a visitor badge. No persons will be let into classrooms without doing so. The gates from the bus parking area to the campus will be locked as soon as all the children have unloaded the buses. They will be open again when school is over and children have loaded the bus. The gate in front of the preschool will be locked after 15 minutes of starting time. If you come late you will need to call the preschool for entrance. We are making improvements in other areas. We have purchased cameras and lighting. These will be installed by summer 2013. An automatic connect system will be installed by March that will send information to your text, email and or phone line. The information that you last submitted to the school will be used. If the information is incorrect, please let the school office know. We are now on Facebook and Twitter. Information will be updated weekly, so like us at Kernville Union SD for the latest postings. In addition to the measures to increase communication, a trimester safety flier will be sent out with reminders and updates. I saw several of you at the safety meeting that we had on Tuesday, January 29 at 3:00 and again at 6:00. Thank you for your comments and ideas. If you have suggestions or comments to help us in our efforts to improve our campus safety, please email me or your school principal. My email address is rshive@kernvilleusd.org.
